Announcements:

Scholastic Book Fair: The Scholastic Book Fair is this week!  Join us Monday through Thursday 8:40am-3pm, Thursday during Academic Night and Friday 8:40am-11am to find exciting books for your students. With any purchase over $1, get a ticket to win a basket with a selection of items from the fair!  Students can vote for their favorite books at the fair and the most popular ones will be donated to the school’s media center!

Breakfast at the Book Fair! Join us for Breakfast at the Book Fair Wednesday morning 8:30-9am!  Drop by before or after you drop off your student(s) to check out what the Book Fair has to offer this fall.  We’ll have some small breakfast treats and coffee available.

Spirit Week: It’s Math Spirit Week this week!

  • Monday: Doubles/Multiples Day. We’re seeing doubles and multiples! Dress like a twin.
  • Tuesday: Math Mindset/Mental Health Day.  Your mental health matters! Wear green today.
  • Wednesday: Odd Day.  Things look a little “odd”… Wear mismatched clothes!
  • Thursday: Nifty Number Digit Day.  Wear clothes that have a number on them.
  • Friday: Pattern Palooza.  Stripes, polka dots, checkered… wear any kind of pattern!

Academic Night:  Glen Haven’s Fall Academic Night is this Thursday October 18.  This is a fun learning-filled night for Glen Haven families with reading games, math puzzles, games, and other projects as well as and successful strategies to help children becoming life-long readers. The whole family can participate in hands-on activities that make math and reading fun.  We’ll see you there!

 Win an ice cream party! It’s time for PTA’s annual class competition- The class with the most PTA members by the end of October will win an ice cream party from Carmen’s!  Please help your children(s) class(es) win by submitting a membership and encouraging others to do so! Memberships are just $10 and they are not limited to parents: grandparents, other family members, friends, and neighbors can support the school by joining!  Simply complete and return the membership form with payment to your child’s teacher (click https://ghespta.org/2018/10/10/2018-2019-membership-form/)

 International Night: International Night is just a month away on Thursday, November 15th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.  We are excited to host another one of our famous fashion shows!  We are equally excited to share that we will be sharing our family traditions and cultural cuisine in a new format.  This year we will be inviting families to share cultural artifacts, including food, at tables that will be organized by country.  Our students will have a chance to travel around the world in just one night by visiting many of the countries our community represents!  Look out for more information in your child’s Wednesday folder this week.

Kids Helping Kids Food Drive: Once again this year, Glen Haven will be participating in the Kids Helping Kids Food Drive.  Please donate any non-perishable items (peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, rice, tuna fish, cereal, etc.) between October 1 – 31, 2018.  The classroom that collects the most food (in items) will win an ice cream party.  Food will be donated to families in Montgomery County, Md.  Thank you for your support!

Giant A+ School Rewards programs has started! From September 7 to March 16, 2019, you can support Glen Haven Elementary School (up to two schools can be supported!):

o Visit www.giantfood.com and click REGISTER at to create your new online account, or

  • Click on SIGN IN – MANAGE MY ACCOUNT – SAVINGS & REWARDS, to log on to your existing online account

o Once you are logged in to your account, you can select a school for A+ Rewards.

o You need your 12-digit GIANT CARD number found on the back of the card.  If you have a GIANT CARD but do not know your number, call the GIANT CARD HOTLINE at 1-877-366-2668 and select Option #1.  The representatives will be able to provide you your GIANT CARD number.

New car-rider dismissal process: Beginning next Monday, October 8, GHES will begin a new car-rider dismissal process. All drivers will stay in their cars and your children will be brought to the curb at the designated pick-up area marked by cones.  This will be a change and your support and patience is appreciated!

 

Family Movie Night: On Friday October 12, come join us for Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation!  Free admission. Concessions will be for sale. Wear your PJs and bring a blanket to sit on. Doors open at 6:30pm and movie starts at 7pm. Sponsored by the Glen Haven Elementary PTA. This is not a drop off event, a parent or guardian must be present.

  • October 13 and 14- The Bethesda Row Arts Festival is recognized as one of the top fine arts festivals in the United States. For two days, on Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and 14, 2018, the streets of downtown Bethesda are transformed into an outdoor gallery of arts and crafts. Over 190 selected artists will showcase their museum quality works of all different types, including: ceramics, drawings, fabrics, glass, graphics, jewelry, metalwork, paintings, pastels, photography, printmaking, sculpture, wood, and 2D and 3D mixed media. The event is held rain or shine. Bethesda Row is located on Woodmont and Bethesda Avenues, Elm Street and Bethesda Lane, east of Arlington Road, and is within walking distance from the Bethesda Metro station. Glen Haven Weekly Scoop: Week of September 24

Announcements:
Fundraiser for childhood cancer: In recognition of September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, fifth grade will be launching a Coins4Kids Cancer Campaign to raise awareness of neuroblastoma and funds to support research to find a cure for this aggressive childhood cancer.   Fifth grade will be delivering coin collection cups to each classroom on Thursday, September 27 to prepare for the campaign, which will be held on Friday, September 28.   The money collected will be donated to the Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation.    To learn more about neuroblastoma, please visit https://www.coins4kids.org/.

 

Dads are awesome: “Dad’s Take Your Child to School Day” will be held this Friday, September 28 beginning at 8:40 a.m.   Dads will be able to take pictures at a photo booth, walk their child to class, and then join us in the cafeteria for light refreshments and a presentation.  Dads will then be invited to visit their child’s classroom until 10:00 a.m.   We look forward to seeing you this Friday!

 

Glen Haven Beautification/ Friends of Sligo Creek Annual Sweep the Creek:  This Saturday September 29, we will meet at the end of Windham Lane by the footbridge (behinx d Glen Haven Elementary School) and work our way back to Glen Haven Park and the school grounds. Gloves and trash bags will be provided. Event will be from 9am to 11am – rain or shine. Let’s help pick up the area around our school and work on building our community. Students will receive 25 Dojo Points for a minimum of 25-30 minutes of clean up. Please sign in upon arrival.

 

Family Movie Night: On Friday October 12, come join us for Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation!  Free admission. Concessions will be for sale. Wear your PJs and bring a blanket to sit on. Doors open at 6:30pm and movie starts at 7pm. Sponsored by the Glen Haven Elementary PTA. This is not a drop off event, a parent or guardian must be present.

For three days, the Library of Congress is holding “Star Wars Under the Stars,” and will be screening the original trilogy episodes of the blockbuster series. Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope will be shown at 7:30pm on the North Lawn of the Jefferson Building. Go early — characters from the film be available for photo ops beforehand starting at 6:30pm. Admission is free.

14th Annual Museum Day. All ages (family-friendly event). Times and locations vary. The theme of this year’s Museum Day is “Women Making History,” honoring women in society who are trailblazers in the arts, sciences, innovation and culture, and emboldening others to be pioneers as well. Smithsonian Magazine spearheads this initiative in which participating museums across the United States open their doors for free to those who download a branded ticket. Details online. Check It Out: A Library + Art Pop-up Program. Kids 10 and under. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Check it out! Find our cart in the gallery and check out a kit to use inside the Museum. Kits include a children’s book, suggested artworks for viewing and hands-on materials. This program is a partnership between Smithsonian Libraries and the Hirshhorn. FREE Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC.

KIDfest: Find Your Spark!. All ages (family-friendly event). 12 to 5 p.m. KIDfest is part of KID Museum’s ongoing effort to expose children and adults alike to the power of hands-on maker learning and inspire the next generation of creative and confident innovators. Along with two stages of live musical performances and entertainment, the festival also features dynamic talks by local inventors, as well as exhibits and activities that include both fun, off-the-wall inventions and serious science innovations. ZooFiesta. All ages (family-friendly event). 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visitors can kick off the Smithsonian-wide Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at “ZooFiesta: Un dia de diversion animal para toda la familia!” There will be a variety of fun-filled family activities, including live music and educational activities about conservation in Central and South America. Fundraiser for childhood cancer: September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.  Mrs. Pykosh’s School Energy and Recycling Team is asking students and parents to collect your spare change and send it in for the Coins4Kids program (https://www.coins4kids) benefitting the Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation (http://www.cncfhope.org/).

First Day of School- School begins on Tuesday, September 4, 2018!

 School Hours are 9:00 am – 3:25 pm (doors open at 8:40).  Please be mindful that instruction for students begins at 9 am.  Because we want to assure that students have the entire school day to use for lessons and school work, parents who need to be in the building at or after 9 am will need a guest sticker.

First Parent Information Session/PTA Meeting: Please join us Thursday September 6 for our first Parent Information Session/PTA Meeting of the year! FREE pizza will be served at 6:30pm.  The meeting will begin at 7:00pm.  Alphabest will provide free childcare for school age children. Spanish translation available.

–         For your future planning: Parent Information Sessions/PTA Meetings convene on the first Tuesday of the month, unless otherwise noted.

–         Save the dates! Oct 2, Nov 8 (Thurs), Dec 4, (no mtg in Jan), Feb 5, Mar 5, Apr 2, May 7, Jun 4
