Announcements:
First Day of School- School begins on Tuesday, September 4, 2018!

 School Hours are 9:00 am – 3:25 pm (doors open at 8:40).  Please be mindful that instruction for students begins at 9 am.  Because we want to assure that students have the entire school day to use for lessons and school work, parents who need to be in the building at or after 9 am will need a guest sticker.

First Parent Information Session/PTA Meeting: Please join us Thursday September 6 for our first Parent Information Session/PTA Meeting of the year! FREE pizza will be served at 6:30pm.  The meeting will begin at 7:00pm.  Alphabest will provide free childcare for school age children. Spanish translation available.

–         For your future planning: Parent Information Sessions/PTA Meetings convene on the first Tuesday of the month, unless otherwise noted.

–         Save the dates! Oct 2, Nov 8 (Thurs), Dec 4, (no mtg in Jan), Feb 5, Mar 5, Apr 2, May 7, Jun 4

–         Schedule each month: 6:30-7pm free pizza, socializing. 7-8pm meeting; free child care provided for school-age children. Spanish translation available.

Summer Food Service Program – The Summer Food Service Program provides free, nutritious breakfasts and lunches to children and teens in low-income areas during the summer months when they are out of school. See the link for more information

GHES Summer Playdates–  Each playdate will be at Evans Park (2001 Evans Pkwy, Silver Spring, MD 20902) from 2:00pm – 4:00pm.  This is a great opportunity to see old friends and make new ones especially for incoming kindergarten students. The playdates will be held on Saturday, June 30th; Sunday, July 15th; and Saturday, August 18th.  There are no rain dates.

 

Free English Class – Free English Class will meet every Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. This class will focus on conversational English and Language skills. Please come and join us!

Capital’s Parade– Rock the Red and celebrate the Caps’ Stanley Cup victory! A parade will take place on Constitution Avenue, starting at 23rd Street NW and heading east to 7th Street NW. It kicks off at 11am, but get there earlier if you want to stake out a good spot to see it — optimal viewing will be between 7th & 17th Streets NW.

 

Twilight Concert Series – Each Tuesday evening in June at Brookside Gardens there will be a series of musical performances.  Bring your friends and family, and don’t forget your chairs or blankets (allowed in the Gardens on concert evenings ONLY). Food trucks will also be available. This is a FREE rain or shine event.

Sligo Middle School Administration Change – The current Sligo MS Principal, Mr. Dimmick, and the Assistant Principal, Mr. Lear, are leaving.  Mr. Dimmick will be the principal at Gaithersburg High School and Mr. Lear will be a Principal Intern.  Due to this change in leadership, Sligo MS will be holding a community meeting on Tuesday, May 1st, at 6:00 pm. Preschool Education Program (PEP) – There are limited openings in the PEP classes at Glen Haven Elementary School.  PEP classes enable students with and without disabilities to learn together in a five day per week half-day classroom setting.  These classes meet Monday through Friday from 9:00am – 11:25am.  If your child turns 3yo by September 1, 2018, then they are eligible to enroll. The tuition is $150 per semester ($300 for the entire school year). Please contact Susan Schindler, PEP Parent Educator at 301.649.8051 ex. 126 for more information or to enroll your child.  Applications can also be picked up in the Glen Haven Elementary School Main Office.

  • 4/26 – Spring Academic Night – From 6:00pm – 7:30 pm. You are invited to visit the science fair, play academic games, see the cell art show, visit the book fair, and more! Also, students who attend will receive 10 dojo points.
  • 4/27 – 2nd Cup of Coffee/Merienda/Parent Meeting/PBOM Ennis invites parents to school for a parent meeting and then into the classrooms to read to their child’s class (or another class that could use a reader). Please arrive at 8:45 for the meet and greet. The Parent Meeting will start at 9am. The topic is “Focusing on the Military Child.” Then everyone will head to the classrooms at 9:30 for a dance party and to read the book of the month.  Interested in being a volunteer reader? Feel free to contact your child’s teacher or contact Ms. Lucina at Jennifer_M_Lucina@mcpsmd.org   Show PBOM spirit by wearing purple to honor military families during the Month of the Military Child.

GTLD Network’s Book Swap and Discussion – Thursday, April 26 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at Walter Johnson High School (6400 Rock Spring Dr, Bethesda, MD 20814) in the Media Center.

Parents are always searching for new insights and tools to help our kids. As a result, we can amass a good number of books and guides in our homes!  In the spirit of spring cleaning and sharing resources as a parent network, join us for our first-ever book swap. Please bring to the meeting any books you have found useful and get ready to take home some new ones!
