  • Looking to affect positive change in the larger community? Maryland PTA is joining Maryland Hunger Solutions in collecting individual and organizational sign-ons in support of the federal No Shame at School Act (Click here for the sign-on letter). When students arrive in the cafeteria without cash in hand or in their school meal accounts, they accrue meal debt. Unfortunately, many school systems – even here in Maryland — utilize practices that shame, stigmatize, or even punish students in an attempt to ensure their families repay their accrued school meal debt. Maryland Hunger Solutions has recently released a report, which takes a look at the current policies that exist in Maryland to address this issue and outlines best practices for preventing both debt and stigma in the cafeteria. Maryland PTA is also supporting efforts at the federal level to put an end to embarrassing practices and to reduce school meal debt. In response to this nationwide issue, Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Senator Tina Smith (D-MN) have introduced the No Shame at School Act, which would amend the Richard B. Russell National School Lunch Act. This bill would not only abolish these harsh practices, it would require schools to take the necessary steps to ensure that all students who are eligible for free meals receive them, and permit school systems to retroactively claim free and reduced-price school meal reimbursement rates for students who are certified to receive them during the school year. Maryland Hunger Solutions will share the sign-on letter with Maryland’s Congressional delegation to encourage them to cosponsor this important piece of legislation.       Maryland PTA is collecting signatures of both individuals and organizations. Please let us know if you are interested in signing-on by 12:00 p.m. on Monday, November 4th. In addition, please share this letter with any individuals or organizations that might also be interested in showing their support for the No Shame at School Act. If you have any questions, would like more information, or plan to sign-on, please reach out to Julia Gross at jgross@mdhungersolutions.org.

Our PTA also helps provide resources for parents to socialize and form a supportive community (e.g., monthly informational meetings and 2nd Cup of Coffee), so you always know what’s going on at Glen Haven.       In addition, your PTA membership helps fund mini-grants for school events, educational materials, and classroom accommodations. Need any more motivation to join? You can also win an ice cream party for your child and a gift card for your family!

  • It’s time for PTA’s annual class competitions- this year there are TWO!
    • The first competition is a parent raffle! This year, we will be doing a raffle for parents/guardians who sign up to become PTA members by November 5 – there’s a chance to win a $50 Giant grocery store gift card!  The winner will be picked and announced at our PTA meeting on November 5 (no attendance required, though!)

Join us Wednesday November 20 for Parent Academy: Positive Communication (GHES Media Center; 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm).

Reminders:

  • School Hours are 9:00 am – 3:25 pm (doors open at 8:40).       Please be mindful that instruction for students begins at 9 am. • MCPS provides meals for students with negative account balances through Dine with Dignity program. Launched in November 2018, the Dine with Dignity program allows students with negative account balances to enjoy traditional breakfast and lunch choices at no cost. Families will be asked to pay off, or to contribute within their means when they can, toward the outstanding balance on their student’s lunch account; the Dine with Dignity Fund pays the remainder.

  • Glen Haven Family Movie Night: Be on the lookout for our Fall family Movie Night, date TBD!
  • Positive Communication With Your Child. Is it difficult to interact with your child? During this workshop, you will learn strategies to strengthen family communication, explore techniques to understand verbal cues, and establish age appropriate expectations for behavior and consequences. Presented by Parent Assistant Resource (PAR). Recommended for families of elementary, middle, and high school students.

Because we want to assure that students have the entire school day to use for lessons and school work, parents who need to be in the building at or after 9 am will need a guest sticker.
Community members who would like to contribute to the Dine with Dignity Fund can donate online at: https://www.mcpsfoundation.org/pages/our-programs/dine-with-dignity-program
