Announcements:

  • MCPS and the Montgomery County Council of PTAs (MCCPTA) are hosting an Elementary and Middle school Science Curriculum Night from 6:30–8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Gaithersburg High School. (Snow date: January 28) At the event, parents will hear from MCPS teachers about science standards and what they can expect their children to learn in class. Sessions are targeted to parents with students in elementary and middle school. Childcare and interpretation services will be available. Gaithersburg High School is located at 101 Education Blvd. in Gaithersburg. Details about the event can be found online here.
  • Glen Haven vision and hearing screening this week:  Trained hearing and vision screeners will be at Glen Haven ES on January 22-24 to screen students new to MCPS, students in Kindergarten and 1st grade, and others.  Please direct specific questions to the school nurse.
  • Our Pennies for Patients campaign continues! Pennies for Patients is calling all heroes to join our squad!  Families, our school has decided to take on blood cancer and our mission is to help find a cure.  Be on the lookout for more information this week that will allow your child to participate in this rewarding event and emphasizes the importance of social and emotional learning and gaining the experience of helping both children and adults in their fight against blood cancer.  Check out the school link at: https://events.lls.org/pages/nca/Glen-Haven-Elementary-School-2020  and get started with online donations today!  More information to follow!
  • Family Movie Night: Join us Friday January 31 for Abominable! FREE admission; concessions (e.g., pizza, popcorn, desserts) will be for sale to raise funds for the PTA. Wear your PJs and bring a blanket to sit on! Doors open at 6:30 pm, movie starts at 7:00 pm. *This is not a drop off event; a parent or guardian must be present*

Reminders:

  • School Hours are 9:00 am – 3:25 pm (doors open at 8:40).       Please be mindful that instruction for students begins at 9 am. Because we want to assure that students have the entire school day to use for lessons and school work, parents who need to be in the building at or after 9 am will need a guest sticker.
  • MCPS provides meals for students with negative account balances through Dine with Dignity program. Launched in November 2018, the Dine with Dignity program allows students with negative account balances to enjoy traditional breakfast and lunch choices at no cost. Families will be asked to pay off, or to contribute within their means when they can, toward the outstanding balance on their student’s lunch account; the Dine with Dignity Fund pays the remainder. Other ways to help out the PTA:

  • Parent Information Session/PTA meeting THIS week: Please join the Glen Haven PTA on Tuesday, January 7, 2020 to learn more about the Maryland State Report Card. Mrs. Heifetz and Mr. Mackall will be presenting on Glen Haven’s MSDE Report Card and the School Improvement Plan.  The Maryland Report Card is designed to evaluate school success in several ways, measuring state test results in English Language Arts and Math; postsecondary readiness; progress of English learners in achieving English proficiency; graduation rate; and students with access to and earning credit for a well-rounded curriculum. We hope all families will be able to join us – FREE pizza will be served at 6:30 PM and the presentation begins at 7:00 PM. Alphabest will provide supervision for school-aged children from 7-8PM. ***PTA meetings are hosted by the PTA and OPEN TO EVERYONE- membership is not required to attend!!***

  • Youth Mental Health and Wellness is a critical issue in Montgomery County and the nation. The Third Annual MCPS-MCCPTA Mental Health and Wellness Forum (Saturday, January 11, 2020 from 1 pm – 5 pm at Earle B. Wood Middle School, 14615 Bauer Drive, Rockville, MD 20853) allows allows families, students, and staff to learn more about the challenges we face and find resources within MCPS and in the wider community. There will be sessions on Teen Depression and Suicide Ideation, Accessing Care and Responding, Mindfulness, Cross-Cultural Mental Health Challenges, and more! There will also be Free Mental Health First Aid Training (8:00am-4:00pm, advance registration required). Register for the entire forum at online:https://bit.ly/2P0P3iw.

  • Parent Information Session/PTA meeting next week: Please join the Glen Haven PTA on Tuesday January 7, 2020 to learn more about the Maryland State Report Card. Mrs. Heifetz and Mr. Mackall will be presenting on Glen Haven’s MSDE Report Card and the School Improvement Plan.  The Maryland Report Card is designed to evaluate school success in several ways, measuring state test results in English Language Arts and Math; postsecondary readiness; progress of English learners in achieving English proficiency; graduation rate; and students with access to and earning credit for a well-rounded curriculum. We hope all families will be able to join us – FREE pizza will be served at 6:30 PM and the presentation begins at 7:00 PM. Alphabest will provide supervision for school-aged children from 7-8PM. ***PTA meetings are hosted by the PTA and OPEN TO EVERYONE- membership is not required to attend!!***

  • School Hours are 9:00 am – 3:25 pm (doors open at 8:40).       Please be mindful that instruction for students begins at 9 am. Because we want to assure that students have the entire school day to use for lessons and school work, parents who need to be in the building at or after 9 am will need a guest sticker.
  • MCPS provides meals for students with negative account balances through Dine with Dignity program. Launched in November 2018, the Dine with Dignity program allows students with negative account balances to enjoy traditional breakfast and lunch choices at no cost. Families will be asked to pay off, or to contribute within their means when they can, toward the outstanding balance on their student’s lunch account; the Dine with Dignity Fund pays the remainder. Other ways to help out the PTA:

So, “What exactly does the PTA do”, you ask? Our PTA helps to organize fun after-school activities and community events (e.g., movie nights), as well as teacher and staff appreciation events. Our PTA also helps provide resources for parents to socialize and form a supportive community (e.g., monthly informational meetings and 2nd Cup of Coffee), so you always know what’s going on at Glen Haven.       In addition, your PTA membership helps fund mini-grants for school events, educational materials, and classroom accommodations.     • Our next competition is for a class ice cream party! The class with the most PTA memberships by December 6 will win an ice cream party (to be held in Spring)!

  • School Hours are 9:00 am – 3:25 pm (doors open at 8:40).       Please be mindful that instruction for students begins at 9 am. Because we want to assure that students have the entire school day to use for lessons and school work, parents who need to be in the building at or after 9 am will need a guest sticker.
  • MCPS provides meals for students with negative account balances through Dine with Dignity program. Launched in November 2018, the Dine with Dignity program allows students with negative account balances to enjoy traditional breakfast and lunch choices at no cost. So, “What exactly does the PTA do”, you ask? Our PTA helps to organize fun after-school activities and community events (e.g., movie nights), as well as teacher and staff appreciation events. Our PTA also helps provide resources for parents to socialize and form a supportive community (e.g., monthly informational meetings and 2nd Cup of Coffee), so you always know what’s going on at Glen Haven.       In addition, your PTA membership helps fund mini-grants for school events, educational materials, and classroom accommodations. Need any more motivation to join? You can also win an ice cream party for your child!

  • Join us for a Dine-Out Date at Chipotle!   • It’s time for PTA’s annual class competitions!
    • Our next competition is for a class ice cream party! The class with the most PTA memberships by December 6 will win an ice cream party (to be held in Spring)!
    • Please help your children(s) class(es) win by submitting a membership and encouraging others to do so! Reminders:

  • School Hours are 9:00 am – 3:25 pm (doors open at 8:40).       Please be mindful that instruction for students begins at 9 am. Because we want to assure that students have the entire school day to use for lessons and school work, parents who need to be in the building at or after 9 am will need a guest sticker.
  • MCPS provides meals for students with negative account balances through Dine with Dignity program. Launched in November 2018, the Dine with Dignity program allows students with negative account balances to enjoy traditional breakfast and lunch choices at no cost. Families will be asked to pay off, or to contribute within their means when they can, toward the outstanding balance on their student’s lunch account; the Dine with Dignity Fund pays the remainder.
