Announcements:
We’re down to the last two days of the PTA’s annual class competition! Ms. Reymann’s class has taken the lead; just a few members behind are Ms. Manevitz’s class (currently second) and Ms. Rykoskey’s class (currently third). And several other classes are still close in the running. Simply complete and return the PTA membership form (click here) with payment to your child’s teacher by this Wednesday, October 31. The class with the most PTA members by October 31 will win an ice cream party from Carmen’s! Remember, PTA memberships are just $10 and they are not limited to parents: grandparents, other family members, friends, and neighbors can support the school by joining.

Attention Bakers!! We need your help! The PTA is hosting a Bake Sale on Election Day, Nov. 6. We need your help! Please donate goodies – cakes, cookies, brownies, cupcakes. The more we have, the better! (Place them in individual wrapping or baggies – two per bag; do not send in dishes that need to be returned) Don’t bake? We take CASH donations too! We also need people who can staff our table and sell the goodies! Drop goodies off in the school lobby on the morning of Nov. 6 (as early as you can). Parent Information Session/PTA meeting: We are excited to announce a special guest speaker for our Thursday, November 8, 2018 Glen Haven Parent Information Session/PTA meeting! Sarah B. Mallory, PhD is an Assistant Clinical Professor and the Director of Special Education Teacher Preparation Programs at University of Maryland. After spending 15 years working with children with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities, she has turned her attention to special education teacher preparation and program design. Dr. Mallory will be joining us to share strategies for “discussing different” in a manner that discourages ableism and promotes an inclusive school environment for all learners. She will also share how to shift to “person-first” ideology. Come with an open mind and your difficult questions as we learn more about disability, inclusion, and preparing our children to be members of a diverse and inclusive society. Mrs. Heifetz will also share an overview of the Special Education programs and services at Glen Haven. We hope all families will be able to join us! FREE pizza will be served at 6:30 PM and the presentation begins at 7:00 PM. Alphabest will provide supervision for children from 7-8PM. ***PTA meetings are hosted by the PTA and OPEN TO EVERYONE- membership is not required to attend!!***

International Night: International Night is less than a month away on Thursday, November 15th from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. We are excited to host another one of our famous fashion shows! We are equally excited to share that we will be sharing our family traditions and cultural cuisine in a new format. This year we will be inviting families to share cultural artifacts, including food, at tables that will be organized by country. Our students will have a chance to travel around the world in just one night by visiting many of the countries our community represents! Look out for more information in your child’s Wednesday folder this week.

Kids Helping Kids Food Drive: Once again this year, Glen Haven will be participating in the Kids Helping Kids Food Drive. Please donate any non-perishable items (peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, canned vegetables, rice, tuna fish, cereal, etc.) between October 1 – 31, 2018. The classroom that collects the most food (in items) will win an ice cream party. Food will be donated to families in Montgomery County, Md. Thank you for your support!

Giant A+ School Rewards programs has started! From September 7 to March 16, 2019, you can support Glen Haven Elementary School (up to two schools can be supported!):
• Visit http://www.giantfood.com and click REGISTER at to create your new online account, or
• Click on SIGN IN – MANAGE MY ACCOUNT – SAVINGS & REWARDS, to log on to your existing online account
• Once you are logged in to your account, you can select a school for A+ Rewards.
• You need your 12-digit GIANT CARD number found on the back of the card. If you have a GIANT CARD but do not know your number, call the GIANT CARD HOTLINE at 1-877-366-2668 and select Option #1. The representatives will be able to provide you your GIANT CARD number.

Other ways to help out the PTA:
• Help our PTA by purchasing items with the Box Tops for Education logo then clip and send them to school to be collected. The classroom that submits the most Box Tops each month will celebrate with a popcorn party and an overall winner will get a class pizza party at the end of the school year!

Class Dojo: Please make sure you set up a Class Dojo account for your child. Your child’s teacher has the information regarding how to set this up or you can click on this link- https://classdojo.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205417305-Create-a-Parent-Account#web. The school uses Class Dojo for most communications so it is very important for you to have access to your child’s account and check for announcements daily.

Community Events and News:
October 20 to November 4 Kids EU Fest: The 11th Annual Kids Euro Festival will present more than 80 FREE children’s performances and adventures all around the DC-Metro area. Concerts, storytelling, puppetry, cinema, dance, magic, and workshops are among the offerings. And museums, public libraries, movie theaters, arts and cultural organizations, Library of Congress, the Kennedy Center, and other local theatres are some of the many performance venues, making the experiences accessible to families throughout the area and showcasing places that enrich and bolster the community.
The festival, designed for children ages 2-12, is the largest of its kind in the U.S. Most countries in the European Union are represented in shows and workshops that highlight national cultural traditions and art.
October 26th to November 11th 2018 Maryland STEM Festival: The mission of the Maryland STEM Festival is to encourage all students, regardless of background and experience, to take a greater interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) with the hope they will pursue a STEM related/focused career.
Fall events at Rock Creek Park: Join us in October as we celebrate Fall 2018 with special hikes, planetarium programs, and events. Our special planetarium show this month (scheduled for Saturdays and Sundays at 1:00 p.m.) is Spooky Night Sky. Admission is free.
Story Time at the National Postal Museum. Taking place every Monday, the program includes a book reading and activities for little ones in the museum’s education space. Stay to explore the rest of the museum, which is full of interactive exhibits that all ages can enjoy. Story Time is at 10:30am and repeated at 11am. Admission is free.
